cluding the magnetic and temperature fields, the stress–strain state, the values
of operating electric current and densities. These conditions are achieved by
placing inserts inside the CSMC bore.
The toroidal field (TF) conductor insert coil was designed and fabricated in
the Russian Federation [11]. This is a single-layer solenoid made of a Nb Sn
3
CIC SC similar to the ITER TFC one. The TFCI carried a current of 46 kA in a
magnetic field of 13 T (Figs 5.23–5.25; Table 5.10). The coil was instrumented
with temperature sensors and taps to monitor the current–voltage and current–
temperature characteristics along the SC length. The coil support structure was
made of 03Х18Н20АГ6 (a Russian standard grade) high-tensile-strength stain-
less steel at the Izhorskij plant (Saint Petersburg, Russia).
