          • Provides a separate product line for each cartridge with the ability to
monitor product quality for each cartridge as required
          • Contains membrane plates that can be replaced if required
          • Offers chemical cleaning of the module that can be done in situ without
             disturbing biological activity
          • Product is taken by gravity suction so product pump can be avoided
          • Offers low power consumption
          • Backwashing is not required to maintain the flux because of an innova-
tive operating process of allowing backflow of water in a natural process
where the membranes get cleaned in situ.

          9.6.2 Submerged MBR System
Aquatech has also developed its submerged MBR configuration, consider-
ing the increasing demands for treatment of municipal wastewater. The
submerged MBR operates at low water velocity and flux compare to the pres-
surized MBR. This is mostsuitablefor the application of municipal wastewater
where the volume of water treated is very high because of its low energy
demand and sustainable flux values. Each membrane cartridge contains
               2
10 m areas. Each module consists of membrane cartridges, a steel rack, an
          air diffuser, apermeatewatermanifold,andanairinletheader.Eachmembrane
cartridge consists of number of membrane plates that are prepared by welding a
FS-type membrane on a designed PP plate. Membrane modules are aerated
fromthe bottom, which continuallyscrubs the membranesurface.Membranes
are backwashed at gravity pressure after certain time intervals, and in addition a
cross flow of liquid is provided over the membrane panel. The combination of
all these factors prevents membrane fouling, and the module can generate con-
stant product flow for longer time. The compact modular design gives the
benefit of a higher membranesurfaceareaandeasily removable membranecar-
tridge during assembly or replacement. A submerged MBR membrane
cartridge with module is shown in Figure 9.10. Modules of 80, 160, and
                2
320 m designed membrane area can be used as per the application.

          9.7 CASE STUDY
          9.7.1 Background

Aquatech took the opportunity to install Aqua EMBR for industrial waste.
The significant key features are as follows:
          1. The biological waste did not have a typical BOD and COD ratio and was
in the range of 0.1–0.2. The wastewater for degradation was only treat-
             able with difficulty.
