Table 9.4 Typical wastewater compositions
Sr. No Parameter Average Value Unit
1 pH 6–8
2 Temperature 25–35 C
3 Chemical oxygen demand (COD) 1600–2000 mg/L
4 Biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) 150–200 mg/L
5 Alkalinity 210 mg/L
6 TKN 100–130 mg/L
As the feed COD range is on the high side and also nitrogen is present in
the water, the system has to take care of the oxidation of both carbon and
nitrogen. The system was operated at high MLSS and high SRT to take
the maximum loading in terms of COD and to achieve oxidation of both
carbon and nitrogen.
9.9 TECHNOLOGY SELECTION
Treatment technology selection for wastewater takes into account its origin,
its constituents, and the formulated treatment objective, which is derived
from discharge criteria (Veenstra et al., n.d.).

9.9.1 Technologies That Can Be Proposed
Considering the nature of the wastewater and the volume of wastewater to
be treated, three processes could be applied.
1. Anaerobic UASB (Upflow anaerobic sludge blanket)
2. Chemical oxidation
3. Activated sludge with membrane filtration (MBR).
