About the Author and Contributors
Anna Mindess has worked as a sign language interpreter in busi-
ness, legal, educational, medical, and performing arts settings for
over twenty years. She holds a Comprehensive Skills Certificate
and a Legal Interpreting Certificate from the Registry of Interpret-
ers for the Deaf. Her master’s degree, from San Francisco State
University, is a special interdisciplinary major she designed, called
language and culture with a focus on sign language.
Thomas K. Holcomb is currently associate professor in the area
of Deaf Studies/Deaf Education at Ohlone College in Fremont,
California. Prior to this he was a faculty member at San Jose State
University, California, in the Division of Special Education and
Rehabilitative Services, and at the National Technical Institute for
the Deaf in Rochester, New York, in the Department of Human
Development. His academic preparation includes a B.A. in psy-
chology from Gallaudet University, an M.S. in career development
from the Rochester Institute of Technology, and a Ph.D in educa-
tion from the University of Rochester. He is frequently invited to
present at conferences and has published widely on topics re-
lated to Deaf culture, Deaf identity, student development, and
mainstreaming.
