Construction of Infrastructure
In this stage, all the civil and other infrastructure work prior to turbine
specific work is performed. Since most of the activities were described
in some detail in the planning phase, descriptions in this section will
be brief.
Site Preparation
In this activity, all tasks related to preparing land and setting up tem-
porary office are performed. Tasks include:
Setup of a temporary office onsite. The onsite office is usually two
trailers with electric and internet connections (if available).
This office serves as an administrative office.
Upgrade of public roads. This involves working with the local
department of transportation to enhance the public roads in
order to support the transportation of construction equipment
and turbine components.
Wind farm land preparation. This involves clearing of brush and
trees, leveling land, construction of access road, and other
tasks to make the entire wind farm easily accessible to earth-
moving equipment and cranes. Depending on the site, there
may be significant amount of earthmoving involved.
Wind turbine land preparation. At each turbine location, the fol-
lowing areas are constructed:
Crane pads for both main and tail crane
Tower, nacelle, and blades staging area
Rotor assembly area
Storm water drainage
Foundation excavation and compaction
Temporary storage area and other areas. Within the wind farm,
a temporary storage area is created to store items like cables,
rebar, and other material. In addition, an area may be required
for concrete preparation. Most of the heavy items are moved
directly to the turbine site.
In all the construction activity, a storm water pollution preven-
tion plan is prepared that minimizes erosion and sedimentation. All
