4.1.3 Automated generation
of concept drawing
The functional description can be applied to the design methodology to
a certain extent, and a representative application is to produce the basic
layout drawing when inputting a group of parts to be processed. The con-
cept and layout designs are very tedious work in order to find a suitable
solution compatible with the machining requirements of the client,
because the design typically is one of the ill-defined problems. In
machine tool design, the closed-loop and “chicken and egg” features are
extremely prominent. The functional description enables such a prob-
lem to be solved with less difficulty, as proposed by Saito et al. [7]. In
their proposal, the basic layout design can be carried out by inputting
either the shape and size of the work or the machining method in accor-
dance with the manufacturing requirements of the user.
Figure 4-7 reproduces a design system to produce the basic layout
drawing of the TC, in which the input is either the machining process
