Top-Down and Sheet Metal Parts Engineering Design with SOLIDWORKS® 2018
Sheet Metal Overview
Sheet metal manufacturers create sheet metal parts from a flat piece of raw material. To
produce the final part, the material is cut, formed and folded. In SOLIDWORKS, the
material thickness does not change.
Talk to colleagues. Talk to sheet metal manufacturers. Review other sheet metal parts
previously designed by your company. You need to understand a few basic sheet metal
definitions before starting the next parts, CABINET and BRACKET.
The CABINET begins as a solid part. The Shell feature determines the material
thickness. The Rip feature removes material at the edges to prepare for sheet metal bends.
The Insert Sheet Metal Bends feature transforms the solid part into a sheet metal part.
The BRACKET begins as a sheet metal part. The Base Flange feature is the first feature
in a sheet metal part. Create the Base Flange feature from a sketch. The material
thickness and bend radius of the Base Flange are applied to all other sheet metal features
in the part.
There are two design states for sheet metal parts:

• Formed.

• Flat. 0 0

state. The Flatten feature creates the Flat Pattern for BRACKET
the manufactured flat state.
