Top-Down and Sheet Metal Parts Engineering Design with SOLIDWORKS® 2018
Pierce Aluminum, in tum, sells material of different sizes and
shapes to distributors and other manufacturers. Material is sold in
sheets or cut to size in rolls. U.S. Sheet metal manufacturers work
with standard 8ft - 12ft stock sheets. For larger quantities, the
material is usually supplied in rolls. For a few cents more per
pound, sheet metal manufacturers request the supplier to shear the
material to a custom size.
Check Dual Dimensioning from Tools, Options Document
Properties to display both Metric and English units. Do not waste
raw material. Optimize flat pattern layout by knowing your sheet
metal manufacturer's equipment.
Discuss options for large cabinets that require multiple panels and
welds. In Project 1, you were required to be cognizant of the
manufacturing process for machined parts.
In Project 4 and 5 you created and purchased parts and recognized
the Draft feature required to manufacture plastic parts.
Whether a sheet metal part is produced in or out of house,
knowledge of the materials, forms and layout provides the best cost
effective design to the customer.

-;Q~ Save manufacturing cost and time. Obtain a list of standard
dies and forms from your sheet metal manufacturer. Utilize their
standard dies and forms at the start of your design. Prepare for
lead-time if custom dies and forms are required.
You require both a protective and cosmetic finish for the
Aluminum BOX. Review options with the sheet metal vendor.
Parts are anodized. Black and clear anodized finishes are the most
common. In harsh environments, parts are covered with a
protective coating such as Teflon® or Halon®.
The finish adds thickness to the material. A few thousandths could
cause problems in the assembly. Think about the finish before the
design begins.
Your sheet metal manufacturer suggests a pattern of square cuts
replace the Louvers for substantial cost savings. Suppress the
Louver. The Linear Pattern is a child of the Louver. The Linear
Pattern is suppressed. Utilize the Sketch Linear Step and Repeat
option.
