60 The Ultimate Palm Robot
Chapter 5, we’ll show you where to get software for your robot, and how to
use the software with your robot. If you want to do your own programming,
go to Chapter 6 to see how to use the Palm Robot Programmer, or Chapter 7 to
see how to program the Robot using C/C++, BASIC, or Java (Chapter 8).
If you are using the PPRK with a Palm VII, you still have some work to do.
Proceed to Chapter 4 to see how to do this.
Building the PPRK with the BrainStem Controller
Like the PPRK easy kit, all you need to build the BrainStem kit is some pa-
tience and a couple of screwdrivers—one standard and one Phillips. Before
attempting to put anything together, you should examine everything in the
kit and compare it to the shipping list to ensure that you have everything you
are supposed to have. Here is a list of all the parts that should be in the kit:
❏ Battery charger, four rechargeable AA batteries, one 9-volt battery
❏ Three poly roller wheels
❏ Three servos
❏ One acrylic chassis plate
❏ One BrainStem controller
❏ One bag of parts containing the aluminum frame, the sensors,
and the various screws, washers, and nuts to connect the sensors
to the frame
❏ One bag of parts containing the screws, nuts, and washers for
holding everything else together
❏ One bag of parts containing the wires, crimps, and battery
holders
Additionally, you should have purchased an interface cable of some kind.
Since the BrainStem can interface to many different platforms, the interface
cable is sold separately from the kit.
The Batteries
The BrainStem kit contains rechargeable batteries to power the robot. Since
you can’t do much with uncharged batteries, start by putting the batteries into
